It's that time of year again...

Where all of the big names in retail start persuading us to spend our money in their stores this Christmas. According to an article in the Financial Times, the main focus of Christmas adverts in the 80s were on the price of the products, whereas today, Christmas adverts are about creating trust between the consumer and the retailer, along with differentiating one store from another. While these retailers want to differentiate themselves from one another, they all managed to come up with the same message. Does this defeat the objective? Anyway, here are some of the most talked about Christmas adverts of 2015. Which ones do you like most?

Christmas Is For Sharing

First up is Sainsbury's supermarket. Their Christmas advert is based on the popular children's story character 'Mog' the cat and the book "Mog's Christmas Calamity". Mog can be quite mischievous. One line I always remember from reading the books as a child is 'bother that cat'. The advert is quite long at 3:30 minutes, and shows the trouble that Mog gets himself into, until he unknowingly saves the burning house brings the villagers together to celebrate Christmas. Like a lot of adverts this Christmas, it ends with the theme of Christmas is for sharing.

Show Someone They're Loved This Christmas

This advert is from John Lewis department store. They spent £7 million on the advert. This years advert shows us a lonely man on the moon. A little girl spots him through her telescope and looks out for him every night. At the end of the advert, we see the little girl had managed to send a gift to the man on the moon by balloons. It's a telescope so he can feel part of the celebrations back on earth, and see his special friend for the first time. The message of the advert is to show someone they are loved this Christmas.

The Best Part of Winning is Sharing

Surprisingly, this advert from the Spanish lottery has been winning the hearts of the British public this Christmas, of course, thanks to social media. It follows the life of a lonely security guard working the night shift in a mannequin factory. He has nobody to talk to, and shows us how the mannequins have become his friends. Eventually he sets up a lottery syndicate for all of the staff and starts putting the mannequins in amusing positions to make the factory workers smile during the day shift. They win the lottery, and make the local paper. Justin thinks he has been forgotten about, before going to work that evening and meeting all of the day staff to a bottle of champagne. The message of the advert is the best part of winning is sharing.

What do you think?

Are the big names in retail getting us to spend more money by convincing us that Christmas is about sharing?
Is Christmas all too commercial these days?
What will you be sharing this Christmas?
